VQ’s Monthly News – August 2024
Posted on by Katie Burchell
This month’s newsletter features an important security notice relevant for VQCM users, and the team’s upcoming travel plans.
Following the release of VQ Conference Manager 4.4, we’ve published a new series of guides on the functionality we’ve added to Device Management and Automation (DMA).
The first of these videos covers a new feature for DMA – Firmware Management. This enables users to upgrade Cisco Collaboration devices using RoomOS firmware images downloaded from the Cisco Software Central.
Watch the video here:
CVE notice
We have been made aware of a moderate-severity CVE that impacts IdentityServer, which is used as part of the VQCM login and authentication, in all VQCM versions from 3.12.1 to 4.3.1. The 4.4.0 release contains an updated version of IdentityServer and so is not impacted by this CVE.
The CVE impacts specific calls with IdentityServer that can (incorrectly) cause a URL to be trusted and marked as safe for redirects. It is important to note that “by itself, this vulnerability does not allow an attacker to obtain user credentials, authorisation codes, access tokens, refresh tokens, or identity tokens” (https://blog.duendesoftware.com/posts/20240731_security_patch/).
The most likely form of exploitation will be as part of a phishing attack.
As with any CVE, customers with externally exposed systems are more at risk, especially as their login pages will be externally accessible, making it easier for malicious actors to craft viable malicious links and pages that imitate their VQCM login pages.
We advise all customers, especially those with externally exposed login pages, to upgrade to the latest 4.4.0 release as soon as possible. If upgrading your system is not feasible, please contact VQ Support (support@vqcomms.com) to discuss your use case and potential risk profile.

Upcoming travel plans
This week, the VQ Team showcased the latest VQCM, DMA and Metro upgrades at Cisco GSX.
Thank you to everyone in the Cisco ecosystem for visiting us at our stand and making this another memorable trip to Las Vegas for VQ.
Over the next few months, you can meet the team at:
WebexOne – the team will be attending WebexOne from 21– 24 October in Miami, Florida. Stay tuned for more details.
DoDIIS Worldwide – for our partners and customers in the DoD space, VQ will be attending this conference in Omaha, Nebraska, from 27 – 30 October. Contact Giles Adams (gadams@vqcomms.com) if you’re interested in meeting.
CCW training update
VQ has changed the process and purchasing of the VQCM Training.
Previously, we sold attendance to the courses on a per-course, per-person basis. This is changing to a per-person, per-day voucher system.
Advantages for you the partner, and the customer:
There is no need to select how many people will attend which course at the time of purchase.
Often, the purchasing and operational groups are different. Per-day vouchers enable customer operational teams to consume the training according to their business needs.
If VQ adds additional training courses to the syllabus, unused training vouchers can be used for new content.
Information on the training courses can be found here.
Please contact the sales team (sales@vqcomms.com) should you have any questions or would like to discuss our training offerings.

Since 2020, we have worked with our partner, Kaizen Networks, to deliver seamless conferencing, underpinned by VQ’s customer-centric approach.
This partnership has gone from strength to strength with one of our key customers looking to grow its investment in VQ Conference Manager with the addition of DMA.
We’re excited to share the latest release of VQCM with the 4.4 update. This version brings a range of highly requested functionality. This includes File Server, which features CMS branding files, device branding files and customer content storage.
Earlier this month, three of us from VQ Communications – Harry, Harvey and Rich, had the opportunity to attend Agile on the Beach 2024 at Falmouth University in Cornwall. The conference was a fantastic blend of insightful talks and hands-on workshops; all centred around Agile methodologies and packed with fresh ideas and emerging trends in software development.
Reflections from the Team Harry: “It’s very easy to get trapped in your own bubble and do things ‘your way.’ I found AOTB invaluable in helping me gain perspective and question the ways we work in all aspects of development.”
Harvey: “This was a great chance to see what other teams are doing and bring those best practices back to VQ Communications.”
Rich: “It was a great opportunity to spend time with other software professionals. The beach party was a great way to end the first day. I would recommend this conference to people from all areas of the business.”

An incredible Cisco Live US
Cisco Live US 2024 was a landmark event for VQ, with more bookings than ever before for our meeting rooms and a huge amount of traffic to our stand in the Collaboration Village.
One of the biggest highlights of Cisco Live is always having the opportunity to meet face to face with members of the VQ community. Throughout the week, it was great to sync up with many old and new faces, prospective and existing customers, partners and our Cisco colleagues.
Metro, our new end-user app had a great showing at the event, with lots of interest. DMA also continued to make waves as the Cisco-endorsed successor to TMS, as we roll out more highly requested functionality, including both CMS branding and device branding files with File Server.
Another highlight of the week, which can’t go without a mention, was Elton John, who put on a fantastic performance at the Allegiant Stadium on Wednesday night for the Cisco Live celebration.
At Cisco Live, we also had the first opportunity to demo VQ Conference Manager 4.4 to a wider audience, with it being very well received.
VQCM 4.4 release webinar
Don’t worry if you didn’t get to see 4.4 in action at Cisco Live – we’ll be hosting a release webinar on July 10th showcasing the latest update to VQCM, including:
CUCM Connector
Device Firmware (RoomOS) Deployment
File Server
CMS branding files
Device branding files
Customer content storage
M356 Connector and (VQ) Hybrid Calendar
OBTP2 addition of Webex and Teams (CVI) invitations
Support for CentOS, which underpins VQCM 3.x, will end on June 30th 2024. As a result of this, there will be no more major releases to the 3.x platform.
To access the latest updates to VQCM, DMA and Metro, users will need to migrate to our 4.x platform. You can begin this free process by emailing support@vqcomms.com.
We cover the details of this migration journey in our new blog.
VQ Metro
With VQCM 4.4, we’re introducing the next enhancements to Metro including downloads for iOS and Android*.
To learn more about Metro, watch our overview video on Metro’s features and use cases for Cisco collaboration infrastructure.
The VQ Team have attended various workshops and virtual training events with our partners at Cisco over the last few weeks.
In mid-June, we had the opportunity to present VQ’s conferencing solutions for one of Cisco’s virtual partner events. Joel Price and Ben Douglas in our sales team also attended the Cisco Public Sector Summer Summit FY24 in Tewkesbury.
Joel shared his thoughts on the event:
“Cisco invited VQ to attend the Cisco UK Public Sector (PS) event. The event had over 60 Cisco employees in attendance, including Cisco’s UK PS Managing Director and upper Management Team.
“The day focused on enabling discussions on the latest trends and innovations in public sector technology and how Cisco can generate more business during their new Financial Year, which starts in August. The event presented a fantastic business opportunity for VQ to promote our solution.
“VQ Communications was mentioned several times by the Cisco Management Team during their own presentations as being a great ecosystem partner to have more engagement with. This reinforces, yet again, how Cisco sees VQ as a great solution for their customer base and together we can generate yet more business in the collaboration space.”

Inside VQ
A word from the VQ Team
Tamsen, VQ’s Quality Analyst, shared some thoughts on her first few months with the team:
“I wanted to share a bit about my experiences and insights as the first Quality Analyst at VQ. It’s been exciting, challenging, and at times, a whirlwind adventure.
My role is to ensure that we deliver a top-notch product to our customers with every release, which means ensuring there has been comprehensive testing across all departments: Infrastructure, Core, and UI.
Being part of the product planning meetings has been particularly enlightening. It’s a fantastic way to get a sneak peek at the upcoming work and to discuss how quality and testing fit into the bigger picture.
My colleagues have been incredibly supportive. They’ve taken time out to explain how various parts of the system work and how they interact with one another. This team spirit has been invaluable and much appreciated.
As I continue this journey, I’m looking forward to the many challenges and learning opportunities ahead.
A message to the VQ team – thank you all for your support and patience.”

Inside VQ
A word from the VQ Team…
In May, the VQ Team were across the globe meeting with Cisco partners and customers, from Riyadh to Washington D.C.
Graeme Fish, our Business Development Manager for EMEA, had a few words to share on his trip to the Middle East:
“It has been around six months since VQ visited the Middle East Region. It was great to return and be joined by Abhijit Dey to engage technically and commercially with partners, customers, and Cisco during our visit to Saudi, Oman, Qatar and Dubai. I would personally like to thank everyone we met for their warm welcome and hospitality.
We spent five working days in Saudi where I arranged to meet new partners and present VQ Meeting Services, DMA and introduce Metro to all. The feedback was extremely positive and will allow each to use this knowledge to open discussions with their customers. Our final day was to present alongside Cisco to 30 partner contacts and network with each, this has helped us gain wider traction that will open new opportunities.
The final five working days were split between Cisco and partner meetings in Oman, Qatar, and Dubai. A VQ-specific partner workshop was held for 18 attendees, and a new opportunity was found on the day. All in all, it was a great trip.”
A few words from Abhijit Dey:
“My first visit to four countries in the Middle East was an amazing experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome in each country. I enjoyed immersing myself in four distinct cultures and experiencing fantastic food.
Work-wise, the trip revealed many opportunities. Since VQ DMA is now offered as the Cisco endorsed TMS successor, there’s strong market demand, with interest coming from the market rather than us having to push the product. Both partners and Cisco sales teams really appreciate VQ’s technology.
VQ’s April newsletter is jam-packed with news as we ramp up to our biggest showcase of the year at Cisco Live in Las Vegas.

Say hello to VQ&A
VQ&A is our new video series, delving into the people behind VQ and our approach to crafting the VQCM platform.

The VQ Team had a great time presenting at Cisco’s Modern Workspaces Partner Bootcamp sessions over the past few weeks across several countries.
This month, Oli from VQ’s engineering team tells us about his experience attending one of these device bootcamps in Sydney, Australia:
“What a privilege to represent VQ proctoring our DMA lab on our furthest excursion to date, Sunny Sydney. For me personally it was a complete 180 from my usual day to day. I’m used to writing VQ features in a small office at ‘Casa de Oli’, and it was almost an abstract feeling to see those features being battle tested, for real, by Cisco partners halfway across the world.
It was fantastic to see such great interest in DMA which sparked some interesting conversations, not just about DMA but the whole VQ suite and the exciting features we have in active development.
These conversations often lead to a few ‘schooners’ down the Green Moustache at end of play, and I’m not ashamed to say leaving me with a slightly sore head on one particular morning.
I must say a big thank you to the Cisco team involved in organizing this event. Not only did they do a great job of the bootcamp, but also helping this pale Brit survive and thrive in ‘a land down under’, arming me with a wealth of travel tips to make the most of after the event.
In summary, DMA is a big hit. We received some really positive feedback; most notably just “how simple and easy it is”. Those well versed with TMS know it is not an easy task to get right. So, this is a real testament to the whole team involved and I feel incredibly proud to be a part of it.
The VQ future is bright and may the VQ world tour continue.”
Thoughts from new members of the VQ Team
The VQ Team continues to grow, with new addition Richard who shared his experience so far:
“My time at VQ has been highly positive. Working remotely from Cornwall, I’ve appreciated the company’s effective support and the straightforward communication across the team.
“The autonomy I’ve experienced allows me to manage my projects efficiently while maintaining a good balance with my life here by the coast. It’s gratifying to contribute to our collective goals in an environment that values practicality and focused effort. I look forward to our continued progress and success.”
March has been filled with Cisco workshops, planning for Cisco Live and more.

It’s time to migrate to VQCM 4.x
If you haven’t heard, our VQ Conference Manager 3.x platform will no longer receive new updates. CentOS, the operating system underpinning the 3.x platform, announced support would end later this year.
All future development for VQCM and DMA will take place on the 4.x platform, so now is the time to move over to 4.x.
Our engineering-focused course spans three days, covering a range of in-depth topics for installation, integration, menus, and management of key functionality within VQCM.
Completion of the course will award students with a certification for their respective programmes.
Please contact our sales team (sales@vqcomms.com) for more information about training.
Interview with Cisco
During our time at Cisco Live in Amsterdam in February, Joel Price, our Customer Success Manager spoke with our Cisco colleagues about VQ Conference Manager, the problems it solves, customer user cases and outlined what’s coming next in 2024.
Inside VQ
A word from Mike…
In what seems a blink, Q1 is just about done; here in the UK, spring has arrived and everything is starting to go green which is fantastic to see. I was in Washington last week and the sky was blue and it was warm; cherry trees were in blossom so it definitely felt like winter was a receding memory.
Inside, we’ve been full-on. The team feels huge; we’ve added more people and have another new hire starting in April. The breadth of activity is quite staggering. HA on 4.3.1 looks good with the last few refinements wrapping up by the end of the month; we’ve got initial Beta sites lined up and will be fully engaged with them during April. We’ll broaden HA installs once we’re comfortable it’s behaving in the field consistently with what we’ve experienced internally during development and testing (which is that it is predictable and reliable).
4.4 and the next round of DMA functionality which includes things like File Server (Device firmware images, CMS branding files) and CUCM import is coming up to release.
Metro is getting some major love; we’re doing a rework around how peripheral devices such as cameras and microphones are handled; this should address consistency issues we’ve found in the field. We’ve also added background blur. Metro Voice is becoming real; by the end of March, we should have Metro making SIP voice calls via CUCM with all the enabling SIP goodness running on the VQ VM and installed via a playbook. Service calls on Metro and things like translation services, advisers and sign language interpreter have been incredibly well received.
Metro for Outlook, Teams and Microsoft 365 integration, Calendaring are making great progress; we’ve done some reworking and that’s yielding real benefits.
Cisco Live in Las Vegas is now about 9 weeks away; the goal is that we’re there, we’re there big and we’re showing all of these really great things we’re about to release.
We’d love to see you at CLUS24.

The latest series covers the upgrades included in VQCM 4.3:
This month, we hear from Annabelle, Jack and Ben, some of the newer members of the VQ Engineering and Sales teams.
Annabelle
“I’ve just finished three months at VQ and it’s been great so far. I’m continuously supported by all the team members from different departments and you really do feel part of the team with a common goal.
“There’s plenty of work to do and I’m looking forward to the year ahead with all the exciting projects coming in 2024.”
Jack
“The approach that Mike, the CEO, has about working is spread across the entire team at VQ; when deciding to do something, assume that the answer is always yes. This has many benefits: it ensures the work you do has a good reason for it, and it keeps business and workload moving, among others.
This is only one example of the many rich mindsets that the team at VQ possess, making it a welcoming, productive, and simply awesome place to work. There is no politics, no over-complicated processes or documentation, just plain and simple teamwork.”
Ben
“I joined the Sales team back in early September, joining alongside several other new starters, attending the office in-person for the first week. I’ve found my experience to be enjoyable, the staff friendly and the role easy to step into. This was predominantly due to the support of my peers, colleagues, and the management. I’m looking forward to continuing my development both personally and professionally, as well as being part of the growth of VQ over future years.”
